Team goal

≈40 %

In challenges we observed, participants trained about 40% more often.

Our own observation from roughly 12–15 challenges of 4–6 weeks each. Not a scientific proof of effectiveness.

How it works

Three steps, one team.

The app is deliberately simple: one challenge, one photo per workout, and everyone sees who shows up.
  1. Create or join a challenge

Set the timeframe and name, or join your friends’ challenge with its invite code. Your weekly goal is yours to choose.

  2. Check in with a photo

Post a photo after your workout and you’re done. It counts as a training day right away.

  3. See your progress together

Count, team goal, and leaderboard show every day where you all stand. Friendly competition included.

Features

Everything that makes showing up easier.

Training together means making progress visible, cheering each other on, and enjoying a little competition. Anything not in the app yet is marked “Planned”.
  • Your own challenges

You set the timeframe and the name; everyone sets their own weekly goal, and together that becomes the team goal. Join several challenges at once: friends, family, colleagues.

  • Photo check-ins

A photo after your workout is your check-in. It counts toward your total immediately, and everyone in the challenge sees it.

The system relies on mutual trust.

  • Leaderboard and weekly count

Who delivered this week? Leaderboard, weekly count, and total make progress visible to everyone.

  • Invite friends

Share your challenge’s invite code. Everyone who joins sees check-ins, the leaderboard, and the chat.

  • Challenge chat

Cheer, tease, make plans: every challenge has its own group chat.

  • Statistics

Your profile shows all your workouts and how long you’ve been at it.

  • Comments

Comment on your friends’ check-ins right under the photo.

  • Planned

    Streaks

Make consecutive days and weeks visible: your streak shows how consistently you keep going.

  • Planned

    Reminders

An optional daily reminder asks when you’re training today and adds it to your calendar.

  • Planned

    Habit tracker

How often per week, month, and year, and which sport you do most: your training habits at a glance.

More than the gym

Every workout counts. Not just at the gym.

Running, yoga, swimming, climbing, kickboxing: a check-in is a photo of your training, wherever it happens. The principle works for any sport, and for mixed groups where everyone does their own thing.
Planned

Planned: pick a sport for each check-in so your stats show what you do most.

  • Strength training
  • Running
  • Yoga
  • Swimming
  • Cycling
  • Kickboxing
  • Climbing
  • Dancing
  • Hiking

What’s next

Public communities

Planned

Today, challenges are private: you train with people you invite. Next up are public communities, challenges you can discover and join without an invite.

  • Discover challenges by sport or goal
  • Join without an invite code
  • Reporting and blocking stay standard

Our story

It all started in a WhatsApp group.

Before the app existed, the challenge ran on copy and paste: one gym photo a day in the group, a counter next to it, done. No algorithm, just friends looking out for each other.

For the developer of the app, that’s exactly what worked: three to four workouts a week have become six to seven, not through more discipline, but because showing up suddenly happened together.

That’s where the idea came from: make the principle available to everyone as an app.

Workouts per week

before

3–4

today

6–7

The origin: one group, one counter.

The idea was born in 2019, in group chats on WhatsApp and Telegram. From the very first check-in, it came down to a single question: did you show up today? The app turns that into a count, a leaderboard, and a chat. The principle hasn’t changed.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Short and honest answers. More help on the support page.
How much does The GymChallenge App cost?

Nothing. The app is free.

Which devices is the app available for?

iOS and Android. The app is about to launch publicly; you’ll find the store links on the download page as soon as they are live.

Which sports are supported?

All of them. A check-in is a photo of your workout, whether it’s the gym, a run, yoga, or a swim. Choosing a sport per check-in is planned.

Who can see my photos?

The app shows your posts only to members of your challenges. Your media can’t be found publicly and is reachable only via unguessable addresses. Today a check-in appears in all challenges you take part in; choosing individual challenges per photo is planned.

How does a workout get counted?

After your workout you post a photo and your count goes up. There’s no verification: you train with friends, not against an algorithm – the system relies on mutual trust.

How do I become a tester?

Through the tester program. You get new versions early and help shape development with your feedback.

Are there public communities?

Not yet. Challenges are currently private and invite-only. Public communities are planned.

How do you handle my data?

This website uses no trackers, no analytics, and no marketing cookies. Form submissions are only forwarded to us by email. Details are in the privacy policy.
